MTSFB Kicks Off
AI Standards Task Force
to Drive National AI Standardisation

The Malaysian Technical Standards Forum Bhd (MTSFB) successfully convened the Artificial Intelligence Standards Task Force (AITF) Kick-Off Meeting on 30 June 2025 at Shaftsbury Asteria Cyberjaya. This milestone gathering sets in motion the national effort to define and develop AI-related technical standards within the communications and multimedia industry.

Bridging the Missing Middle in Malaysia’s AI Ecosystem
Malaysia has made commendable strides in AI through strong national policies (e.g., NAIO, National AI Roadmap), research initiatives (e.g., UTM FAI), and industry-led collaborations (e.g., MyAIRA). However, one critical component has remained underdeveloped — the “missing middle” of technical standards that ensure interoperability, safety, quality, and trust across AI systems.

The MTSFB AITF aims to fill this gap by serving as the dedicated national platform to establish cohesive standards that support AI adoption, industry innovation, research and development, and public trust.

Industry Insight: Telekom Malaysia’s AI Transformation
A key highlight of the meeting was the featured sharing session by En. Muhammad Qusairy Bin Mohamad, General Manager of Artificial Intelligence at Telekom Malaysia. His talk, titled “From Core to Cognitive: Telekom Malaysia’s AI Journey,” showcased TM’s transformation journey in building intelligent, AI-powered networks that are both adaptive and future-ready.

Recap and Reinforcement of Task Force Objectives
Dr. Gopinath Rao Sinniah, Chair of the AITF, reaffirmed its mission to bridge policy and practice through actionable technical frameworks. He also provided valuable context on the Task Force’s formation and its alignment with national priorities and industry needs.

Key Objectives of the Kick-Off
The meeting was structured around two key discussions:

Discussion 1: Evaluation of the proposed AITF sub-group structure, ensuring alignment with national strategic priorities, technical domains, and stakeholder capabilities. The session also reviewed timelines and proposed work plans for the development of AI standards under the Task Force.

Discussion 2: Exploration of current AI landscape challenges to align sub-group objectives with national and industry priorities. Participants examined gaps in existing local and international standards and identified critical focus areas for Malaysia’s AI standardisation roadmap.

The meeting concluded with group presentations summarising key discussion outcomes and insights.

Looking Ahead
The establishment of the AITF marks a foundational step toward ensuring AI technologies in Malaysia are secure, transparent, and interoperable. With inclusive representation from industry, academia, and civil society, the Task Force will advance efforts to make AI adoption both trusted and harmonised.

📢 Stay tuned for the next phase of developments as the Task Force embarks on drafting Malaysia’s AI standards.
