IEM Online Talk: Coexistence of 5G and Satellite Services in the C-Band

On 7 November 2025, an online technical talk titled “Coexistence of 5G and Satellite Services in the C-Band” was organised by the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) through its Electronic Engineering Technical Division, in collaboration with the IEM Penang Branch. The session aimed to address technical challenges associated with the shared use of the C-Band spectrum by 5G and satellite services.

The session highlighted the evolving use of the C-Band, which has traditionally been allocated to satellite services and is now partially utilised for 5G deployment in the 3.5 GHz range. Discussions focused on potential interference issues between terrestrial 5G networks and satellite receivers, underscoring the importance of effective technical mitigation measures to ensure service reliability and efficient spectrum utilisation.

Technical insights were shared on widely adopted mitigation techniques, including the use of guard bands and band-pass filtering solutions to minimise interference. The session also featured live demonstrations on measuring optimum guard band requirements and configuring filters to enable effective coexistence between 5G and satellite systems, providing participants with practical implementation perspectives.

The talk was delivered by Mr. Anwar Faizd Osman, Vice Chair of IMT and Future Network Working Group of MTSFB and AGM 5G SME Solutions at Telekom Malaysia, and moderated by Ir Dr Huzein Fahmi bin Hawari, a Senior Lecturer at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS.

The session offered two (2) BEM CPD hours and contributed to strengthening industry understanding of spectrum coexistence considerations relevant to Malaysia’s 5G and satellite ecosystem.
